Gas Leak Detection Chicago IL

What Happens After Peoples Gas Leaves

Here’s something a lot of Chicago homeowners don’t know until they’re standing in the cold: when you call Peoples Gas about a suspected leak, they’ll come out, confirm gas is present, shut off service at the meter, and leave. That’s it. They don’t make the repair. That responsibility falls on you — and you’ll need a licensed plumber to get your gas restored. That’s exactly the moment we exist for. At Go-Rooter Emergency Plumbers, we handle gas leak detection and repair for homes and buildings throughout Chicago and Cook County. We locate the leak, repair the line, pressure-test the work, and get your gas back on — so you’re not spending the night in a cold house waiting for answers.

Chicago Gas Pipe Pressure Testing

Old Chicago Buildings, Old Gas Lines

A huge portion of Chicago’s housing stock — the two-flats in Bridgeport, the greystones in Logan Square and Humboldt Park, the bungalows running across Jefferson Park and Portage Park, the courtyard buildings in Rogers Park — was built before World War II. A lot of those buildings still have their original black iron or galvanized steel gas piping. These materials corrode from the inside out over decades, and the first sign of failure is often a smell you can’t quite place. We’ve been working inside these buildings since 2001. We know how the pipes run, where they tend to fail, and what a proper repair looks like in a 100-year-old two-flat versus a newer high-rise in the South Loop. That context matters when we’re diagnosing a leak — it’s the difference between replacing one failing section and unnecessarily tearing out a whole line. After every gas line repair, we perform a pressure test at 1.5 times the working pressure and hold it for a minimum of 15 minutes. Every joint gets re-checked. Gas doesn’t go back on until we’re confident the line is sound.

Emergency Gas Line Repair Chicago

One Call Covers the Whole Problem

Gas leak calls often reveal more than just a leak. An aging fitting that failed might be surrounded by other fittings in the same condition. A line we’re repairing might run past a corroded section we can flag before it becomes the next call at 3 AM. Because we handle everything from gas pipe repair and pressure testing to drain cleaning, water heater repair, sump pump service, and flood control, we can address what we find in a single visit — without sending you to a different contractor for each problem. We use camera inspections to look at what’s actually happening inside your lines, not just guess at it. If something needs attention, we’ll show you and give you the option — not a sales pitch. We also work across the full Cook County service area, including the neighborhoods along the Dan Ryan, Kennedy, and Stevenson corridors and out into the suburbs served by Nicor Gas.
